Post War on Mumbai - The way forward

Adversities in life breed innovations and impregnate the mind with solutions that has always been the driving factor of progress

Amidst all this loss of lives and pain I see a ray of hope

Instead of being a nation which is insensitive, lethargic and a complacent lot we have suddenly realized how vulnerable we have become and all our growth and development process is myopic if the basic sense of security is absent.

We are angry and feeling so helpless, while our brethrens are bleeding out there....

Never have I seen such great viewer ship on TV over the incident from Nov 25th to Nov 29th 2008 .I was myself glued to the TV without able to give any mindshare to anything else and could virtually see that this time people are really very angry , unlike all previous terror strikes in Mumbai. This time people are demanding accountability. From politicians, the government and the policy makers……

The terrorists had aimed at killing 5000 people and repeating the 9/11 incident and wanted to go into the hall in fame as the most deadliest terrorist by striking at will and disappearing to the place where they came from .But we can say we are lucky that their grand plan crumbled and they failed in their core mission.

The citizens taking on being vigilant is a wholesome opportunity to contribute in the redemption of the illness that is now a stark reality that has ceased to only effect the "aam admi" (common man)in India and now taken the elite as well in its gambit.

This is the right time for people like us, to contribute and usher in bringing a change .Yes!! I mean a change that is deeply rooted in our attitude. Until it comes at our doorstep, or effects someone we are in connect we tend to be a set of spectators, merely responding to this as a passing event.

We all are guilty of limiting our sense of ownership only to the extent of the compounds of our homes. Busy!! I guess, too busy, being slaves of our deadlines and drive for wealth and mundane existence filled with petty issues. Let it be a politician or our "aam adami", everyone is devoid of the sensibilities of ownership to our existence. With no measures to pre-empt or even have the faintest idea of what kind of gravity it can play on us.....

I have in the last 16 years, been a witness to so many violent incidents across the country also spent a great part of my childhood in Bombay where street violence is a common scene. It still pains me to see that those memories were built around a high sense of connectivity with one and all, irrespective to what religion, caste or which part of the country we hail from under all circumstances. Bombay is a mini INDIA.I have traveled so much now and never could find the kind of spirit I grew up anywhere so far other than dear old Bombay

We should design a programme that is aimed at empowering people and our politicians. This is a must with the growing focus of India as a country that has a huge global responsibility in the coming years and needs STRONG LEADERSHIP.

We need to first capture the anger of the mass and channel all their anger into a constructive energy force with a powerful training design module

The people who died in the massacre were our own. Our very own kith and kin, who laid down their lives so that most of us can obtain safety and we may not ever have to face a similar situation as unprecedented as this we have just seen. Let their sacrifice not go waste

With an Indian icon like say Amitab Bachchan communicating this, can make a far reaching impact among the highest policy makers and the common man on the street. He is an inseparable part of every family in India.

There is no quick fix solution to this and we have to deliberate serious on the following issues

At the public level

a) Instilling sense of ownership amongst the population
b) We instill high sense of discipline
c) Military training made compulsory as a part of education in the country with the paramilitary forces
d) Public –private partnership in moving the concept of responsible citizenship.
e) Competency development training to our politicians on the lines of values and social responsibility

At the government level

a) Setting up a strong and independent agency that is well equipped and trained to handle crisis management of the present stature and fight terrorism
b) Better connectivity and data sharing of intelligence with all agencies internally in India and powerful networking with class international agencies like Mossad, M16, INTERPOL, CIA and FIB.
c) Allocating a separate budget that can help procure advance GIS and Satellite linked communication systems and advance warfare accessories and anti terrorist technology.
d) Beef up the vigilance systems on the sea and border front.
e) Issue ID cards to the population especially in sensitive areas
f) Empower the policing agencies with strong policies and regulations from Legislature. This includes fast track court proceedings and process in justice administration
g) Pre- empt disaster management drills regularly so that the population is familiar with kind of reactions.
h) Have a Special Anti terror Squad placed in all key cities to repond within 30 minutes of the crisis.

The dark clouds will pass and there will be sunshine once more .let not this awakening die away in the name of resilience..........
