Pomegranate farming offers a new hope to farmers in Punjab

Abohar, Dec.27 (ANI): Farmers in Punjab have taken to growing fruit crops like pomegranates instead of conventional crops like wheat and cotton. Climatic conditions in Punjab are suitable for growing fruits, especially in the southwest region where Kinnow is grown extensively. Gurvinder Singh, a farmer of village Kallerkhera, is happy with his new fruit crop - pomegranates. He once used to grow conventional crops like wheat and cotton. He now grows kinnow and pomegranates in his 45-acre farm. Four years ago, Gurvinder planted 'Mridula' variety of pomegranates in seven acres of area. And, this year, his hard work has borne fruit. Gurvinder's success in growing pomegranates has motivated other farmers also to diversify. The State horticulture department and agricultural scientists, had no role to play so far, but it is expected that they would step in to encourage the farmers. Today, Gurvinder's pomegranates are known for their quality and can compete with the available f

Mind - Balance - Way to relearn constantly

Just like the files laid one upon each other will hold weight of the upper ones and at a given point will result in the topmost of the files falling down and thus establishing a sense of balance for the remaining ones. Likewise the mind or the psyche is able to absorb the reality around and relate to only to the extent of what the evolving has happened. The greater the evolving the greater the perception. Reality is something that is debatable as its all around us and like a microscope or telescope we have to adjust the lenses of comprehension that will automatically compute and show us the resultant reality measurable at that level to which adjustments have been made. Somehow we seem to have in the last 50 years diverted our psyche to more sense gratification and there appears more of disconnect into our inner strength which may throw a chord of confusion on this subject.Like the immense addiction to mobile phones today and other gadgets drains our ability to look within. But the trut

Post War on Mumbai - The way forward

Adversities in life breed innovations and impregnate the mind with solutions that has always been the driving factor of progress Amidst all this loss of lives and pain I see a ray of hope Instead of being a nation which is insensitive, lethargic and a complacent lot we have suddenly realized how vulnerable we have become and all our growth and development process is myopic if the basic sense of security is absent. We are angry and feeling so helpless, while our brethrens are bleeding out there.... Never have I seen such great viewer ship on TV over the incident from Nov 25th to Nov 29th 2008 .I was myself glued to the TV without able to give any mindshare to anything else and could virtually see that this time people are really very angry , unlike all previous terror strikes in Mumbai. This time people are demanding accountability. From politicians, the government and the policy makers…… The terrorists had aimed at killing 5000 people and repeating the 9/11 incident and wanted to go in

The need of critical thinking in good education

Why Critical Thinking? Everyone thinks; it is our nature to do so. But much of our thinking, left to itself, is biased, distorted, partial, uninformed or down-right prejudiced. Yet the quality of our life and that of what we produce, make, or build depends precisely on the quality of our thought. Shoddy thinking is costly, both in money and in quality of life. Excellence in thought, however, must be systematically cultivated. A Definition Critical thinking is that mode of thinking - about any subject, content, or problem - in which the thinker improves the quality of his or her thinking by skillfully taking charge of the structures inherent in thinking and imposing intellectual standards upon them. Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and

Success is the sum of all failures

"Life is full of challenges , at every step in life we come across situations which are trying and tempting us into failures and victories" Does it surprise you that only 400 cokes were sold the first year of its business ; Albert Einstein's Ph.D. dissertation was rejected; Henry Ford had two bankruptcies before his famous success; or Dhirubhai Ambani was working as a gas station attendant, written off as a failure, 20 years before becoming the first entrepreneur in India to take his company to IPO ? Michelangelo couldn't get into art school on three occasions yet became a great sculptor; Abraham Lincoln lost seven elections before winning the Presidency; "Magic" Johnson failed a 1,000 times before he could show his magnificent performance;PC Socar bungled 5,000 time before performing his great magic show that enthralled the world;Sanchin Tendulkar lost 600 matches before becoming the worlds greatest batsman . Each one had their share of setbacks, disappo

The 3 ways technology can reduce the growing rural-urban divide in India

Recently A captain of the industry posed a question "What are the three ways technology can reduce the growing rural-urban divide in India" The solution is 1) High Connectivity, 2) Renewable energy for Power, 3) Multiple economic opportunities for income generation 1) The Private Service providers can look at the vast unexplored market of rural India for connectivity .Reliance is the only company that has reached the corridor. But tremendous effort is required to bring telecommunication facility to the remotest area with internet technology and other related IT enabled technologies for bandwidth like VPN that can be easily installed. This will enable the gap in information flow and knowledge to be bridged. E governance systems that will bring about transparency and eradicate the exploitation of the simple minded rural folks 2) The rural sectors can be self sufficient in power supply by tapping renewable energy in Bio mass, Solar and gas fired digestors that can completely les

Analysing your leadership attitude

Anaylsing Your Style How do you lead your group? What is your attitude to both them and the task at hand? Impoverished Management (low concern for the task, low concern for people). This style is characterised by minimal effort on your part, just enough to get the job done and maintain the group structure. "I'll just let them get on with it, I'm sure they'll do fine, they don't really want me interfering anyway" Country Club Management (low concern for the task, high concern for people). You take good care of your group, ensuring a comfortable, friendly atmosphere. You hope this will lead to the work getting done. "It stands to reason, if they're happy they'll work harder and the work will take care of itself." Authority/Obedience Management (high concern for task, low concern for people). You are probably a bit of a task master. The most important thing is the work. You lead from behind by driving the group in front of you. "We're h

The fear of recession looming over the markets - Review

1. Why have the stock markets corrected sharply recently? 2. How have Indian equity markets performed vis-a-vis other global markets? 3. How is the Indian economy positioned in the face of global uncertainties? 4. What is the outlook for Indian equity markets going ahead? 5. What is the recommended investment strategy for long-term equity investors? 1. Why have the stock markets corrected sharply recently? The sudden and sharp decline in domestic equities is in line with the secular weakness in global equity markets over the last few days, fearing the impact of a probable recession in the US triggered by weaknesses in the housing markets and the subprime mortgage crises there. The magnitude of the recession fears can be gauged by the fact that global markets remained sharply negative despite the record and unexpected rate cut (75 bps) by the US Federal Reserve yesterday. Indian equity markets witnessed significant FII (Foreign Institutional Investors) outflows of c USD 3 B over the las
